What is Melamine?

In the woodworking industry, “melamine” refers to a durable, engineered panel made from sustainably sourced wood fibers bonded with resin under high pressure. This process creates a board that is extremely flat, consistent, and stable, with a smooth surface that is moisture-resistant, easy to clean, and built to handle everyday use.
Not All “Particle Board” is the Same
Melamine panels are often built on what’s commonly called particle board—but that term can be misleading. Like many materials, quality varies significantly.
Lower-quality boards use inconsistent wood particles and weaker manufacturing processes, which can lead to poor performance over time. Unfortunately, these inferior products have contributed to the negative reputation some people associate with particle board.

All of our melamine is manufactured in Grayling, Michigan by Arauco—one of the most advanced panel manufacturers in the world. Their state-of-the-art processes ensure consistent density, strength, and surface quality, resulting in a product you can rely on.
What Makes High-Quality Melamine Better?
One of the key factors that separates high-quality melamine from lower-grade options is chip profile—the size, shape, and type of wood particles used in the core.
It might sound like a small detail, but chip profile plays a critical role in the overall strength and performance of the board. Longer, more uniform wood chips interlock more effectively, creating a denser, more stable panel. This results in better screw-holding strength, improved durability, and a cabinet that performs reliably for years.
