What Is Powder Coating — And Why Do We Use It on Our Garage Cabinet Doors?

When you’re upgrading your garage, every detail matters — from layout to finishes. One term you’ve probably seen while exploring cabinet options is “powder coating.” And if you’re like many of our customers, your first thought is:

“Isn’t powder coating for metal? Can you powder coat wood?”

Great question. And yes, traditionally, powder coating is used on metal. We’ve taken that technology and made it even better — using a process to powder coat wood (we’ve even patented a key part of that process).

The result? A super durable, high end finish. But it's not easy, and that's exactly why it sets us apart. Let’s take a closer look at why we do this — and why it matters for your garage.

What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a finishing process where dry powder paint (made of pigment and resin) is sprayed onto a surface and then baked on at high temperatures to form a smooth, tough, and chip-resistant coating.

It’s incredibly durable — making it a popular choice for metal items like appliances, car parts, and industrial equipment. The result is a finish that’s resistant to scratches, chemicals, and moisture, and it holds its color beautifully over time.

How Does the Powder Stick?

The trick to powder coating lies in electrostatic charge.

  • The item being coated (usually metal) is grounded.
  • The powder is sprayed using a special applicator that gives it a negative electrical charge.
  • Because opposites attract, the charged powder clings to the grounded surface — like a magnet.
  • Once the part is evenly coated, it’s cured in a high-temperature oven where the powder melts, flows, and hardens into a smooth, uniform finish.

How Do You Powder Coat Wood? Wood isn't Conductive?

While wood is not conductive, there is small amount of moisture in the board that carries that ground. Its a tricky process, so we developed a proprietary Dynamic Powder Dispersing System (U.S. Patent No. 9,630,197) that manages the powder output to keep consistency across all the parts, insuring a seamless and durable finish.

Why do we Powder Coat?

Compared to paint or laminate, powder coating is:

  • More resistant to scratches and impact
  • Better at withstanding moisture and chemicals
  • Longer-lasting and more fade-resistant

This Powder Coating breakthrough allows us to:

  • Create edge-to-edge, seamless coverage
  • Bake the finish onto the MDF for maximum durability
  • Achieve a cleaner, stronger, and more consistent result than paint, vinyl, or laminate

What Our Customers Say

Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what Jeffery, one of our customers, had to say:

“Had a great experience with this company, specifically Tony Ross who helped me with the design. He was very responsive and helpful and had great ideas to make the design even better. Shipping was great. Packaging was flawless. Hardware, slides and pulls are high end. The powder coated finish on the doors is amazing. Very durable but really great looking. Love spending time in my new garage workshop! Thanks again.” – Jeffery S. (Connecticut)

We hear stories like this every week — and it’s why so many DIYers and organized homeowners trust us with their garage transformation.
